Six Children with Autism Integrated into Mainstream Schools
Almora. Aarambh Special School, Almora, has achieved yet another milestone. For the past two and a half years, the school has been working with children affected by autism, with the primary aim of preparing them to join mainstream education. Fulfilling this vision, six children have now been successfully admitted to various schools in Almora and Ranikhet, where they are pursuing their early education through regular activities.
School Principal Mrs. Pooja Bhatt informed that currently the school has seven children enrolled, while six have already transitioned to regular schools. The school functions with a 1:6 teacher-student ratio, with three teachers dedicated to seven children.
She explained that children admitted to the special school at a young age have shown remarkable improvements in their physical, mental, and social development. Teachers Mrs. Mamta and Mrs. Meena focus on each child’s individual needs, helping them with daily activities, writing practice, and vocational skills. Meanwhile, Ms. Riya Bhatt conducts pre-vocational activities that support the development of sitting habits, hand movements, and waiting skills.
According to Principal Bhatt, the structure of learning at the special school differs from that of a regular school. Flashcards are used for each task, and model-based activities help children learn about the month, day, time, and days of the week, which they grasp with enthusiasm.
On this achievement, members of the Aarambh Committee congratulated the entire staff and encouraged them to continue their efforts with the same dedication.
Despite limited resources, the school has received consistent support and encouragement from Mr. Kapil Malhotra and the local village head, who frequently discuss activities and initiatives for the betterment of the children.
