Almora.
A heart-touching scene of humanity unfolded at Almora Base Hospital when a paralyzed patient from Someshwar Chanoda and his elderly mother were found sitting helplessly, unable to return home after discharge. The patient, belonging to an extremely poor family, had been admitted the previous day due to severe abdominal pain. After receiving treatment, doctors discharged him on Saturday afternoon. However, the family faced a bigger challenge — they had no means of transport and not even enough money to pay for the journey back home.
For hours, the mother and son sat stranded in the hospital premises. Witnessing their plight, locals informed Youth Red Cross Chairman and Municipal Councilor Amit Sah ‘Monu’ and Councilor Abhishek Joshi, who immediately rushed to the hospital. Assessing the situation, the two leaders contacted Red Cross volunteer Manoj Sanwal. Without delay, Sanwal arranged a vehicle through his own resources and sent it to the hospital. With their combined efforts, the patient and his mother were safely sent back to their home.
During this process, councilors Amit Sah, Abhishek Joshi, and Mukesh Latwal personally assisted in escorting the patient from the hospital premises to the vehicle. This act of compassion and humanity was widely appreciated across the town. Residents praised the Red Cross team and councilors, calling their efforts an inspiring example of social service.
However, the incident also raised a serious concern: Why is there no structured system in place for patients who are financially weak and unable to return home after treatment? In a hilly state like Uttarakhand, where most villages are remote and transportation is limited, poor and sick patients repeatedly face this struggle.
Locals pointed out that if information about this case had not reached Manoj Sanwal and the councilors, the patient and his elderly mother might have been forced to spend the night inside the hospital premises. And this is just one case—many such helpless patients likely suffer in silence every day.
Social workers emphasized that the government and health department must take concrete steps in this direction. Hospitals should establish a “Patient Support Fund” or ensure permanent transport facilities for needy patients. Only then can healthcare truly reach the poor and marginalized sections of society.
This humane act not only brought tears of relief to the eyes of the suffering family but also exposed the shortcomings and negligence in the existing system. The question remains—until sensitive issues like these are addressed with seriousness at the policy level, how will ordinary people maintain faith in the system?
