A sense of fear has gripped the Hira Doongri ward in Almora as multiple sightings of leopards have been reported near the Patal Devi Valmiki settlement. Local residents claim to have seen three to four leopards roaming in the vicinity over the past few days. In light of these alarming developments, Ward Councillor Ekta Verma has written a letter to the Forest Range Officer, Almora, demanding urgent intervention.
In her letter, Councillor Verma stated that leopard movements have become frequent in recent days. According to local accounts, the big cats have been spotted near the settlement during nighttime and early morning hours. This has created panic, especially among children, women, and the elderly. The Valmiki settlement is a densely populated area with narrow lanes and high pedestrian activity, making it highly vulnerable to potential wildlife encounters.
The councillor has requested the immediate installation of a cage trap near the affected area to capture the leopards and prevent any unfortunate incidents. She has also urged the Forest Department to deploy patrolling teams regularly in the vicinity to monitor wildlife movements and ensure public safety.
Residents of the area have echoed these concerns, stating that due to fear of leopard attacks, children have stopped playing outside and people are reluctant to leave their homes after dusk. Parents of school-going children are particularly anxious.
Forest Department officials have confirmed that they have received the complaint and that necessary steps will be taken promptly. A team will soon be sent to inspect the area and take appropriate action.
It is worth noting that leopard sightings have increased across several regions of the district in recent months, highlighting the growing conflict between wildlife and human settlements. Experts suggest that the shortage of food and water in forest areas is pushing wild animals towards inhabited zones in search of sustenance.\
