Weekly Cleaning of Springs; Commitment to Conservation
Almora. Once the primary source of clean drinking water, the traditional water springs (naule) in Almora are now on the verge of extinction. Decades ago, the town had hundreds of such springs, but only a handful remain today. Taking responsibility for preserving these historical water sources, Municipal Councillor Amit Sah Monu and his team launched a dedicated initiative a month ago.
Councillor Amit Sah Monu shared that one spring is being cleaned every week, and plans are in place for their long-term conservation. He emphasized that these springs are not only water sources but also symbols of Almora’s cultural heritage and essential components of water security.
He added that during the monsoon season, when sediment clogs the water treatment plants and supply is disrupted, these springs serve as a vital lifeline for the townspeople. Furthermore, Hindu rituals performed after a person’s death often rely on water from these traditional springs, highlighting their spiritual and cultural significance. “It is our moral responsibility to preserve these springs for future generations,” he said.
The initiative has received full support from fellow Councillor Abhishek Joshi and local organization Hisalu Sanstha. Krishna Singh from Hisalu stated that these natural springs are gifts of nature and conserving them is critical in the face of growing water crises.
As part of the campaign, cleaning of the spring located at New Indira Colony, Simkhani Ground was conducted today. Local Councillor Geeta Bisht and area residents also participated in the activity and appealed to the municipal administration to allocate budget funds for the repair and maintenance of these springs to ensure their long-term protection.
