
Sacred idols crafted from banana trees, devotees ready for divine darshan
Almora. The idol-making ceremony of Maa Nanda–Sunanda, a symbol of faith and tradition, has been completed as part of the historic Nanda Devi Mahotsav. The process was carried out at the Nanda Devi temple premises with traditional rituals in a deeply devotional atmosphere.
Blend of Tradition and Faith
As per centuries-old tradition, this year too the idols of Maa Nanda and Sunanda were crafted from banana trees. This unique practice is not only associated with religious devotion but also keeps alive cultural heritage and mythological beliefs. It is believed that the arrival of Maa Nanda and Sunanda in Almora signifies peace, prosperity, and blessings for the entire region.
Idol convener Ravi Goyal said –
“For us, crafting the idols of Maa Nanda–Sunanda is not just a tradition but a sacred opportunity to serve the Goddess. Making the idols from banana trees is an age-old practice, passed down through generations. It is truly a blessing to shoulder this divine responsibility. Our constant effort is to shape the form of the Mother with utmost devotion and sincerity.”
Active Participation in Idol-Making
Special contribution in the idol-making process came from Ravi Goyal, the idol convener. Along with him, Danish Alam, Raksit Sah, Sonu Prajapati, Ashish Bisht, Ravi Kannaujia, Dr. Chandra Prakash Verma, Devendra Joshi, and Suresh Joshi were also present, actively participating in the traditional construction of the idols.
Temple Echoed with Devotion
Throughout the day, devotees visited the idol-making site. Many not only witnessed the sacred work but also performed prayers, seeking the blessings of Maa Nanda–Sunanda. The temple premises reverberated with devotional chants and traditional folk songs.

Locals believe the Nanda Devi fair is not just a religious celebration but also a festival that preserves and revives cultural heritage. With the completion of the idol-making ceremony, the religious and cultural events of the fair will now begin with even greater enthusiasm.

It is believed that the banana tree symbolizes the power and energy of nature along with the divinity of the Goddess. The idol conveys the message that life attains true harmony only when nature and culture coexist.
