A youth-led movement to preserve and revive traditional water sources in Almora is gaining steady public support. Spearheaded by municipal councilor Amit Sah Monu, the campaign involves the weekly cleaning and conservation of local naulas—centuries-old step wells that once formed the backbone of water supply in the region.
As part of this initiative, a major cleaning drive was recently carried out at the historic naula near the Ramleela stage in the Karnataka Khola area. Former State Minister Bittu Karnatak actively participated in the event, lending both his physical presence and vocal support to the cause.
Karnatak lauded the efforts of the young councilors, stating that such awareness and dedication toward water conservation are the need of the hour. “In an era of increasing water scarcity, it is heartening to see youth stepping forward with a vision to contribute meaningfully to society. These efforts are not only saving water but also re-establishing our connection with our cultural and ecological heritage,” he said.
The drive saw enthusiastic participation from several key figures, including Councilors Abhishek Joshi, Devendra Karnatak, Ramesh Joshi, Abhishek Tiwari, Hem Pandey, Anil Joshi, Badri Prasad Karnatak, Jagdish Tiwari, and other local citizens. Together, they removed silt, algae, and weeds from the ancient water source and ensured proper drainage for improved water flow.
