The e-rickshaws introduced to ease public transportation between Shikhar Tiraha and RCM Mall in Almora are now found breaching their original purpose. Initially permitted solely for ferrying passengers, these e-rickshaws have now started transporting goods, raising concerns among local goods vehicle operators and residents.
Local traders and goods transporters claim that when e-rickshaws were introduced, authorities had assured that they would operate strictly within the passenger transport domain. However, these vehicles are now seen carrying loads from shops and transporting them not only on main roads but also to areas beyond their approved zones.
“This has directly affected our livelihood,” says a goods carrier driver who has been operating in the city for the past ten years. “Now we can barely manage two or three trips a day. Shopkeepers prefer e-rickshaws because they charge less. Our income has been severely impacted.”
The lack of regulation and oversight by the administration has worsened the situation. These e-rickshaws, though not registered or permitted for goods transport, are seen operating like mini loaders across the city.
A senior official from the municipal administration, when approached, admitted,
“E-rickshaws are not authorized to transport goods. If such violations are reported, we will investigate and take appropriate action.”
However, the ground reality suggests otherwise. E-rickshaws loaded with cartons and sacks are a common sight in busy market areas, hindering traffic and increasing congestion. Meanwhile, small-scale goods vehicle operators feel cornered and helpless.
Residents warn that if immediate steps are not taken, the unchecked operations of e-rickshaws could lead to further chaos in traffic and economic imbalance. They urge the administration to implement strict monitoring and enforcement to ensure that e-rickshaws stick to their original function.
As concerns grow, the question remains: Will the authorities wake up to the issue, or will it become yet another unresolved civic challenge?
