Almora. The Kwarab Sudharikaran Sangharsh Samiti on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Union Road Transport Minister and the Governor of Uttarakhand through the District Magistrate of Almora, demanding permanent stabilization of the Kwarab motor road.
In the memorandum, the committee stated that this road is extremely important as it connects the three hill districts of Kumaon—Almora, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh—with the Terai-Bhabhar region. For the past one year, the state government has been carrying out road repair work using traditional methods, but these have proven completely ineffective. Despite crores of rupees being spent, the upper hillside continues to crumble, while cracks have already appeared in the newly constructed retaining walls below the road.
The committee emphasized that every previous attempt to repair this road using conventional techniques has failed. The Kwarab hillside has never accepted such methods, making it essential to issue a global tender and use the most advanced and modern technology to ensure permanent stabilization of the road.
The memorandum further highlighted that the damaged road has caused severe economic losses in the region. Traders across the three districts have incurred losses worth crores, the hotel industry has slipped into recession, and the closure of heavy vehicle movement has led to skyrocketing prices of essential goods and construction materials. From ordinary salaried families to patients needing urgent treatment, everyone is facing dire difficulties due to the poor road condition.
Those present while submitting the memorandum included committee convener Vinay Kiroala, P.C. Tiwari (UPP), Dinesh Joshi / Girish Nath Goswami (UKD), Manohar Singh Negi, Advocate Vinod Chandra Tiwari (Rashtraniti Sangathan), C.S. Bankoti, Deepa Joshi, Pan Singh, Manish Kandpal, Mohd. Shakib, Mohit Shah, Alka Pant, Diwan Singh Bisht, and others.
