Led by Social Activist Vinay Kiraula, Residents Protest and Demand Immediate Action

Residents of Vivekanand Puri Ward in Almora have raised strong objections against the Irrigation Department for the delay in the construction of a drainage channel from H.N.B. Stadium to Jeevan Jyoti. On Monday, as part of a pre-scheduled program, social activist Vinay Kiraula led dozens of citizens in a meeting with the Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineer, demanding immediate commencement of the drainage work, especially in view of the upcoming monsoon season.
It is worth noting that the drain was supposed to be constructed a year ago, but due to the negligence of the Irrigation Department, the work has not yet begun. Vinay Kiraula alleged that although the department granted two extensions to the contractor, no physical work has started at the site, indicating that the department is acting under contractor pressure.
Kiraula stated that this situation is a major setback to Almora town’s ambitious water drainage scheme. The absence of the drainage system exposes local residents to the risk of waterlogging and potential damage during heavy rainfall. He further pointed out that multiple inspections have already been conducted in the presence of departmental officers and assurances of cooperation from local citizens have been given.
Earlier, on June 9, 2025, Kiraula had warned that if the work did not begin within 15 days, a protest would be launched. In today’s meeting, the Chief Engineer assured the delegation that work would commence within four days.
However, the representatives made it clear that if the construction does not begin within the promised timeframe, they will initiate an intense agitation.
